General Information

In 2011, a committee of the Institute of Medicine, or IOM, concluded that serum 25(OH)D concentrations less than 30 nmol/L (less than 12 ng/mL) places people "at risk of vitamin D deficiency"; concentrations ranging from 30 to 50 nmol/L (12 to 20 ng/mL) places some populations "at risk for inadequacy"; and concentrations of 50 nmol/L (20 ng/mL) or greater are considered "sufficient."

For moderate supplementation, a 1,000–2,000 IU dose of vitamin D3 is sufficient to meet the needs of most of the population. The Upper Tolerable Intake Level in the United States and Canada is 4,000 IU per day (IU/day). It’s been suggested that the true Upper Tolerable Intake Level may actually be as high as 10,000 IU/day, but there are limited data on health outcomes using doses near this amount.

Vitamin D is synthesized via sun exposure. Only a few foods naturally contain vitamin D, including fatty fish and cod liver oil. Fortified foods such as milk and cereal are the major dietary sources of vitamin D, but is estimated that 40% of the U.S. population is vitamin D deficient. Therefore, supplementing the diet with extra vitamin D is essential for optimal health.
